Process:
For this project I was tasked with creating a brochure and flyer centered around the Graphic Design concentration at Cal Poly. The brochure and flyer included details on the major, the different concentrations, course offerings, and commendations the program has received. After being given a required set of text, I focused on organizing the information clearly and effectively. I specifically worked on creating a piece that was eye-catching and easily digestible for the target audience of teenagers and prospective students.
Throughout my process work, I kept in mind the audience and the block of text I was given. Since this project was geared towards a young adult audience, I wanted to create a fun, playful set of characters to help guide viewers through the work. I chose rudimentary shapes that evoked the “basics” that students in the program learn.
Color was also an important part of this project for me. I experimented with several color palettes, all of which featured some variation of red, blue, and yellow–again drawing upon the “basics.” The palette I ultimately settled on is a softer, more muted version of this color scheme.
Finally, for typography, I wanted to create a fun pairing between a modern sans serif and an engaging, humanist serif font. I felt pairing these two seemingly opposite typefaces would highlight the versatility and experimental nature of the graphic design concentration.
