Nature’s Choice Web Design

Deliverables: News website, HTML & CSS files

Timeline: Spring 2025

Materials: Sublime Text

Process:

The main goal of this project was to take a news or historical event and rewrite a new hypothetical outcome, then design and develop an accompanying website to display this information. The event I focused on was the defunding of the National Park System, which occurred in early 2025. This was the largest cut in the National Park Service's history and included over $1 billion in budget cuts, a 5% cut to NPS staff, and a 10% cut to Forest Service staff.

As outlined in the scope of this project, I then took this event and “rewrote” it to illustrate what a different reality could have been in which more funding was provided to the NPS. This juxtaposition highlighted how beneficial, to both the public and the parks, increases in funding would be. When thinking about what a better history would look like if these events were to be rewritten, I wanted to also take the time to consider what my web page was comm-unicating about our current political, cultural, and technological development–and what we can learn from it.

Finally, taking this information and research, I created a website using the fundamentals of document styling and basic HTML and CSS selectors, properties & values. When styling my web page, I tried to use effective CSS treatments as well as consider basic accessibility features following the W3C standards for accessibility.

I began by assembling a mood board and collecting imagery and inspiration from websites relevant to my issue. I also researched web design, specifically what typography, layouts, colors, and design elements were characteristic of nature/environmentally focused sites. I used this mood board to guide the majority of my design decisions when implementing CSS declarations.
